Employee Insurance Agency
About this organisation
We think it is important to explain what an algorithm is. Why we sometimes make the choice to use an algorithm. What data the algorithm processes and how it does so. We do this in our algorithm register.
What is an algorithm?
You can compare an algorithm to a recipe. Algorithms are predetermined rules or steps that a computer can follow to achieve a goal. The data (dates) are the ingredients of the algorithm. Among other things, some algorithms use data from the past to make a prediction. They work in a similar way to the algorithms used by meteorologists to predict the weather. We call these types of algorithms models.
Why does UWV use algorithms?
We use data (data) from customers to do our work better, smarter and faster. This allows us to improve and tailor our services. Processing this data is done both by employees (manual) and by computers (automated). In automated data processing, we use algorithms.
Algorithms can make predictions and recognise patterns. This allows our employees to better oversee complex issues, make choices faster, solve problems or automate certain tasks. When you call, for example, a UWV employee wants to be able to see at a glance who you are, what you need from us and in what way. An algorithm helps us to quickly present your correct data to the employee.
How will UWV deal with algorithms?
In July 2021, UWV adopted the Data Ethics Compass. This sets out our principles for using data and developing our algorithms. For example, the use of data and computer technologies must not unintentionally or unknowingly disadvantage or benefit certain people or groups.
Internal supervisor
When we use algorithms, we always ensure that we comply with applicable laws and regulations. For example, the General Data Protection Regulation (the AVG). UWV has an internal supervisor: the data protection officer. He checks whether we comply with the AVG, handle personal data properly and meet all privacy requirements.
