Via the ' Dashboard ' menu option, you can view maps of municipalities, water boards, provinces, and environmental services. These show who is already connected and who is already publishing. From now on, an overview for national organizations has also been created at the bottom of the dashboard. This shows how many algorithm descriptions have been published in the Algorithm Register per ministry and organization type.

May 2025

For visitors:

Improved: Web address structure
Since April 2025, every organization page has included a unique code in the web address alongside the organization's name. This is, for example, an organization code or Chamber of Commerce number from organisations.overheid.nl. If such a code is not available there, a unique code is generated. From now on, these generated codes are 6 digits long (previously 12). This ensures that web addresses remain as short as possible.
From now on, both the web addresses of organization pages and algorithm descriptions will also be constructed using the organization codes of the parent organization(s). This helps researchers and other users to know exactly which organization(s) are involved. Additionally, it clarifies which algorithm descriptions have been published by an organization.

For editors

Added: New templates
In the web form, organizations can use templates of vendor algorithm descriptions. The following templates have been added:

  • 'Heat Stress Modeling Software' (by Tygron)
  • '3Di water management' (by Nelen & Schuurmans)
  • 'License Plate Camera Enforcement Pedestrian Areas', 'License Plate Camera Enforcement Environmental Zone', 'License Plate Camera Enforcement Car-Free City Centre' and 'License Plate Camera Enforcement Zero Emission Zone' (by Brickyard).

This way, organizations can more easily publish descriptions of those algorithms.

For visitors:

Restored: Display of maps in the dashboard
Due to a technical error, maps showing the safety regions and environmental services were temporarily not displayed on the Algorithm Register Dashboard. This has now been resolved. The maps once again show which safety regions and environmental services are connected and have published to the Algorithm Register.

For visitors:

Restored: Correct number of connected organizations in the dashboard
The Algorithm Register Dashboard features a graph showing the number of organizations that have joined over the past 12 months. In this graph, the monthly numbers were accidentally double-counted. This error has now been resolved. The graph now displays the correct numbers again.

For editors:

In the web form, organizations can use templates for algorithm descriptions from suppliers. From now on, organizations can also use the new template to publish the description of the algorithm 'Facial Comparison – tool for identity verification at the municipal counter' (from Oribi Software BV).

April 2025

For visitors:

Added: Inactive organizations also findable via the search bar
From now on, you can also search the Algorithm Register for organizations that are not yet connected or have not yet published an algorithm description. These inactive organizations are already listed onorganisaties.overheid.nl , but have not yet published anything in the Algorithm Register.
If you type such an organization into the search bar, suggestions are still provided. You are then automatically redirected to a help page. This way, you know where to find more information. This prevents you from having to wonder why you couldn't find anything about the organization you were looking for.

Improved: Organization codes added to the URLs of organization pages
Each organization page now has a unique code in the web address (URL) in addition to the organization name. This is, for example, an organization code or Chamber of Commerce number from organisations.overheid.nl. If such a code is not available there, a unique code is generated.
As a result, links to organization pages continue to work correctly, even if an organization changes its name. This also helps researchers and other users know exactly which organization is being referred to.

Two buttons have been added that allow you to sort alphabetically or by the number of published algorithm descriptions.

Improved: Explanation of impact assessments
The explanation regarding the impact assessments on the algorithm description page has been updated.

For editors:

Improved: Quality dashboard
In the release of July 11, 2024, it was indicated that a number of graphs and reports would be displayed. The formatting of these graphs and reports has been improved. The maps were previously not displayed correctly on small screens, but this has now been resolved. The graphs 'Total number of connected organizations' and 'Total number of published algorithm descriptions' were previously displayed by month; this has now been adjusted to by day.

Improved: Algorithm ID
Algorithm descriptions can be downloaded as CSV and Excel files. As of today, the downloaded algorithm description file also contains the algorithm ID. This allows you to link to the URL of an algorithm description.

Improved: Bullet points in Microsoft Word
When downloading algorithm descriptions in Microsoft Word, bullet points were displayed as HTML tags. This has now been fixed.

Added: New template
In the web form, organizations can use templates for algorithm descriptions from suppliers. Starting now, organizations can also use the new template to publish the description of the 'Virtuele gemeente assistent Gem' algorithm (from the Municipality of Tilburg).

Improved: Quality dashboard
In the release of July 11, 2024, it was indicated that broken links would be shown in a report. This has now been further expanded to display specific error codes, such as 404 (Not found), 500 (Internal server error), and other status codes.

July 2024

For visitors:

Solved: Smarter search
The Impact Assessments selection filter allows you to search for algorithm descriptions for which a specific impact assessment has been performed. When selecting the 'Other' option, not all algorithm descriptions were displayed as results, even though they met that criterion. This error has now been fixed.

Improved: Usability (UX)
When you search for algorithm descriptions in the Algorithm Register, the search results are displayed using summary tiles. These contain the most relevant information. This includes the organization in question, a brief description of the algorithm, the publication category, status and, as of now, (1) any impact assessments performed.

The appearance of these tiles was then used as the basis for (2) the display of the summary tile on the full algorithm description pages. This creates more uniformity on the website and gives the visitor peace of mind.

Previously, on the page where an algorithm is described, the name, organization, brief description, theme, status, publication category and impact assessments of that algorithm were displayed in both the summary tile and the table below. To avoid duplicating all this information, (3) this data is now only displayed in the summary tile.

We have improved the (4) display of selection filters for both the algorithms page and the organizations page. The categories are now displayed one below the other, followed by the number of results that fall under that category. If a selection filter contains many categories, this list is automatically collapsed. If desired, the visitor can expand this list to see all categories (and collapse it again to hide it). This makes the selections clearer.

Solved: Smarter search
In the release of June 14, 2024, a new selection filter was introduced that allows searching for algorithm descriptions for which a specific impact assessment has been performed. However, when more than one performed impact assessment was indicated for an algorithm description, it was not displayed as a result when selecting a performed impact assessment as a search criterion. This bug has now been fixed.

Improved: Findability (SEO)
To ensure that everyone can find and recognize the Algorithm Register more easily, findability has also been improved in this release of the Algorithm Register. This means that (1) the titles and descriptions of pages that search engines display as results have been optimized and (2) the URLs of algorithm descriptions have been made more readable. These improvements should ensure that pages of the Algorithm Register are easier to find via search engines (such as DuckDuckGo, Google, Bing, etc.). This also makes pages more recognizable to visitors searching for specific algorithms via search engines.

For editors:

Improved: Quality dashboard
In the release of July 11, 2024, a map of the Netherlands was introduced showing, for each municipality, whether it is already connected and has published one or more algorithm descriptions. A map has now also been introduced showing the same for provinces.

In addition, a bar chart shows how many algorithm descriptions have been published in the Algorithm Register in the publication categories 'High-risk AI system', 'Impactful algorithms', and 'Other algorithms'.

These visualizations make it possible to report on the filling of the Algorithm Register.

Improved: Quality dashboard
In earlier releases this month, maps of the Netherlands were introduced showing, by municipality or province, whether it is already connected to the Algorithm Register and has published one or more algorithm descriptions. As of now, the same is visible for water boards and environmental services in the Netherlands.

Solved: Web form
In the web form, editors can view a preview of an algorithm description they have saved. This allows them to see what the algorithm description or a modification to it will look like before it is published. However, an error occurred where viewing a preview stopped working. This was related to URLs being made more readable (release July 11, 2024) to improve Findability (SEO). This error has been fixed, and the preview function is working again.

Improved: Quality dashboard
In the release of July 11, 2024, the graphs 'Total number of connected organizations' and 'Total number of published algorithm descriptions' were introduced. From now on, the totals are displayed in the header of those graphs.

In addition, the total number of municipalities turned out to be incorrect, which has now been corrected.

Added: New template
In the web form, organizations can use templates for algorithm descriptions from vendors. From now on, organizations can also use the new template to publish the description of the 'Text Analysis' algorithm (from ZyLAB eDiscovery & Compliance Services BV).

Improved: Quality measurement
It is possible that a link is included in an algorithm description in the Algorithm Register that later turns out to no longer work or no longer exists. As of now, these broken links will be displayed in a report, allowing for efforts to be made to repair these references. In this way, we ensure that only working links are present in the register.

Improved: Quality dashboard
The number of organisations describing their algorithms in the Algorithm Register grows every month. This growth is shown in (1) a graph showing the total number of affiliated organisations and (2) a graph showing the total number of published algorithm descriptions. These visualisations make it possible to report on the growth over the past years on a monthly basis.

Using an (3) interactive map of the Netherlands, one can see by municipality whether it is already connected and has published one or more algorithm descriptions.

Finally, a (4) Organization top 20 has been made available. Here you can see which 20 organizations have published the most algorithm descriptions to date.

Improved: Version control
In the previous release, functionality was rolled out in the web form to archive saved versions of algorithm descriptions. Now, when a saved version is archived, it disappears from the list of saved versions associated with the algorithm description and is displayed in the new archive overview. From here, an editor (provided they have the appropriate rights) has a complete overview of all archived versions of all algorithm descriptions for their organization. When it is decided to unarchive an archived version, it is removed from the archive overview and displayed again among the saved versions of the algorithm description.

This is part of the further development of the new web form, which is being extensively tested. If the results are positive, the web form will be updated this summer.

Added: New template
In the web form, organizations can use templates for algorithm descriptions from vendors. From now on, organizations can also use the new template to publish the description of the 'Zivver' algorithm (from Zivver BV).

June 2024

For editors:

Improved: Publication process
The web form is currently being updated for the growing Algorithm Register and the ever-increasing group of publishing organizations. This release includes the following components:

  • User accounts can be created and their rights set from the web form.

  • It can be set per editor whether they are allowed to modify the organization details.

  • In consultation, an alternative workflow can be established for publishing algorithm descriptions. Organizations can then publish using two of their own employees according to the four-eyes principle, without the intervention of ICTU.

This is part of the further development of the new web form, which is being extensively tested until July. If the results are positive, the web form will be updated this summer.

Improved: Version control
Every time an algorithm description is saved by an editor, a version is created and stored. Such a previous version can then be restored, if necessary. Editors are now given the option to archive saved versions of algorithm descriptions that have not been published. The editor also has the option to unarchive the archived versions and republish them.

This is also part of the further development of the new web form.

For visitors:

Improved: Smarter search
1) Tests are being performed for an increasing number of algorithms to provide insight into their impact. It is now possible to search using a selective filter for algorithm descriptions for which a specific impact test has been performed. A distinction is made here between the following performed tests as search criteria:

  • Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA)

  • Impact Assessment Human Rights and Algorithms (IAMA)

  • Other

  • No

Only published algorithm descriptions according to publication standard 1.0.0 can be found using this selection filter.

2) It was already possible for visitors to apply a selection filter to search only for algorithm descriptions of a specific organization. This involves first selecting an organization type (e.g., 'Province', 'Municipality', 'Ministry', etc.) and then a specific organization. The search query was only executed, and the results updated, once the organization was selected. From now on, the search query is executed upon selecting an organization type, making it possible to search for the algorithm descriptions of all organizations falling under a specific type.

Solved: Download all algorithms
It is possible to download all algorithm descriptions via the 'Algorithms' menu option. An error occurred causing the download to freeze. That error has now been fixed.

May 2024

For editors:

Improved: Web form
The Impact Assessment Reference field in the web form now gives the editor the option to select Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) and Human Rights and Algorithms Impact Assessment (IAMA) with a single mouse click. This ensures that the impact assessments are listed in the same way for all publications using standard 1.0.0. If neither of these impact assessments has been used, the editor has the option to enter an impact assessment themselves.

Improved: Quality measurement
The editor now receives a notification when a field in the web form is filled in with a non-working or non-existent link. The field in question is highlighted, so the editor immediately knows which field is involved. The algorithm description cannot be published without the non-working link being corrected.

This is also part of the previously mentioned further development of the new web form, which will hopefully be updated this summer following positive results from thorough testing.

Added: New template
In the web form, organizations can use templates for algorithm descriptions from vendors. From now on, organizations can also use the new template to publish the description of the 'Anonymization Software' algorithm (from DataMask BV).

Improved: Publication process
As mentioned earlier, work is underway to improve the publication process due to the growth of the register. This release includes a number of optimizations for the design of the web form. We are extensively testing these (and future) improvements until July. If the results are positive, the web form will be updated this summer.

Improved: Publication process
Organizations use a web form with a publication process that allows them to take control of what they publish. The publication process consists of multiple steps. This quarter, we are working on improving the entire process. This is necessary due to the growth of the register, and we would like to meet the wishes of an ever-growing group of editors. The most important improvements to date are:

  • The web form has been better designed for a more user-friendly experience.

  • Every time an algorithm description is saved, a draft version is now created. This makes it possible to revert previously saved versions of descriptions.

We will also extensively test these (and future) improvements until July. If the results are positive, the web form will be updated this coming summer.

Added: New templates
In the web form, organizations can use templates for algorithm descriptions from suppliers. From now on, organizations can also use new templates to publish the descriptions of the 'Octobox Anonimiseren' algorithm (from Octobox and DocDirekt) and 'Meldingen openbare ruimte' (from the Municipality of Amsterdam).

Solved: Web form organization details
The web form can be used by organizations to write a text for their organization page in the Algorithm Register. There, organizations can indicate how they handle algorithms and the publication regarding this in the Algorithm Register. Briefly, an error occurred where these organization details could not be saved. This error has been fixed, and everything is working properly again.

For visitors:

Improved: Smarter search
It is now possible to apply a selection filter when searching for algorithm descriptions, so that you only receive results that fall under a specific publication category. A distinction has been made between the following categories:

  • High-risk AI system

  • Impactful algorithms

  • Other algorithms

March 2024

For visitors:

Updated: Text adjustments to information pages
The heading 'Goals of the Algorithm Register' has been added to the ' About the Algorithm Register ' page, where our seven objectives are briefly explained.

Improved: Web Archive
The web archiving for the Algorithm Register is working properly again. For more information, click here.

Updated: the search bar now remembers the suggestions from the search engine
While typing a search query, suggestions appear below the search bar. If you click outside the search bar, those suggestions disappear, but they reappear when you click inside the search bar again.

New: It is now possible to search via the 'Organizations' menu option.
In the main menu at the top, there is an option 'Organizations' where you can view a list of all organizations that have published, along with a summary of their algorithm descriptions. From now on, you can use the search bar from that page to search for organizations.

Improved: Searching by organization abbreviation displays the option to navigate directly to the organization page.
It is now possible to navigate directly to an organization page using an abbreviation, for example BZK (Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations) or UWV (Employee Insurance Agency).

Improved: Using an organization name as a search term, you now find all algorithm descriptions for that organization.
When you type the name of an organization into the search bar, you expect to find at least all algorithm descriptions for that organization. That was not always the case. The search function has been technically adjusted to guarantee completeness.

Improved: Smarter search when an organization name is used as a search term
If you typed the abbreviated or full name of an organization into the search bar, the search results would show all algorithm descriptions where the organization name appeared somewhere in the description. This included algorithm descriptions from other organizations. That is not always what you are looking for. Therefore, you now receive suggestions below the search bar to choose from. This allows you to search faster and more specifically. In the coming period, these suggestions will be further expanded and refined.

Updated: Publication standard is now also displayed
When displaying the search results, it is now also shown which version of the publication standard was used. This is because the available information can differ per version.

Improved: For downloads, you can see that the download is still in progress.
Due to the growth of the Algorithm Register, downloading now takes a bit longer. You are receiving feedback about this so that you know you need to wait a moment until the download is finished.

For editors:

New: Anonymization algorithm description filled faster using the eData BV template
In the web form, organizations can now use the template from the supplier eData BV (also known as eSpecialisten BV) to fill in the algorithm description for Anonymize more quickly.

Adjusted: Verification of the link to the own website on the organization page
On this register, organizations can explain how they handle algorithms on their own organization page. In the 'More information' field, a link to a page on their own website can be included. It is no longer possible to add spaces to that link. However, it is now permitted to add a slash ('/') to the end of a link.

Resolved: Texts organized into paragraphs with blank lines between them were not saved.
Due to a recently occurring bug, information spread across multiple paragraphs was not saved. As a result, information disappeared. This has now been resolved.

January 2024

For visitors:

Improved: The download options have been expanded
All algorithm descriptions in the register are available for download. This can be done for all algorithm descriptions at once in one very large file. It can also be done per algorithm description individually. It is now possible to download algorithm descriptions in both Dutch and English. This can be done as an Excel file or as a CSV file. If you choose a CSV file, you can also open it in Excel, but to open algorithm descriptions in Excel, it is more convenient to download them as an Excel file.

New: Search terms are highlighted in yellow in the search results
When searching, you sometimes see your search term highlighted in yellow in the search results. This is the case if the term appears in the short description. If the term is found elsewhere in an algorithm description, you will see that algorithm in the search results, but not with the search term highlighted in yellow.

Improved: Filter options now also work in the English view
Filter options on the 'Algorithms' page now also work in English.

Improved: Use search terms to filter
You can now combine search terms with other filter options to search more specifically.

New: Menu option: 'Organizations'
A new option, ' Organizations ', has been added to the main menu at the top. Here you will now find a list of all organizations that have published, along with an enumeration of their algorithm descriptions. Organizations now have a new option to provide their own general explanation. They can also explain why they do not publish on the Algorithm Register.

New: Information page: 'Report vulnerability'
A link to a new page with instructions on how to report a security vulnerability on the website has been included in the footer.

Resolved: Organizations are now sorted alphabetically in lists
Organizations are now displayed in alphabetical order everywhere by default.

Updated: The link 'Webarchief' has been renamed to 'Archive'
The footer contains a link to the website's daily updated web archive. The name of this link has been changed to ' Archive '. This is to align with the naming conventions on other government websites.

For editors:

New: Writing help is available for spelling and grammatical errors
When filling out the web form, a spell check is now performed automatically, just like in a word processor, and suggestions for improvement are provided.

New: You can now add information about your organization
You now have the option to provide additional information about how the organization handles algorithms and their publication on the Algorithm Register. There is also an option to add a link to an information page on the organization's own website. Ask your contact person to help you use this for the first time.

November 2023

For visitors:

The search engine has been updated
It is now possible to search for combinations of keywords, spelling errors, abbreviations, and synonyms.

The editor sees how far the web form has been filled out.
The editor can see how complete the algorithm description is using a progress bar above the input form.

The final version of the Publication Standard is available.
Algorithm descriptions in the register have a fixed text structure: the Publication Standard. Previously, this standard was still under development, and various draft versions were put into use side-by-side. As of December, the final version 1.0 became available. It is best for the editor to publish new algorithm descriptions directly in this new format. The editor can migrate existing descriptions from the old format to the new format. This is not required immediately, but is recommended. In doing so, the editor helps improve the quality of the register. Assistance with migration is available.
