Responsible use

Goal and impact

The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is used to determine and monitor the level of consciousness in clients with reduced consciousness due to a possible cranial-brain injury. Measuring consciousness is important for diagnosis, prognosis and for monitoring the client's condition. The scale measures three responses including eye opening (E), motor response (M) and verbal response (V).

Considerations

Human intervention

The application (partly) determines the process flow, but the outcome of the process is entirely determined by a doctor. For example, if a client is pregnant, the doctor will be able to advise differently. It is a tool for the doctor, his medical knowledge and assessment are paramount.

Risk management

No risk because the outcome is only one aspect of the assessment.

The algorithm is a tool for assessing and monitoring a client's medical condition. The algorithm measures only non-discriminatory aspects.

The algorithm does not use any special personal data.

Data

No external dataset is used. The clinician grades various client responses. Based on these grades, the GCS score is determined. The doctor makes his or her own assessment based on the score and his or her own medical insights.
